Abstract

The advancement of digital financial technologies in Indonesia has increasingly penetrated traditional markets, providing new opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to enhance their transactional systems. One such innovation is the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS), developed by Bank Indonesia to unify payment systems and facilitate cashless transactions. This study aims to explore the use of QRIS as a transaction tool for MSME traders in traditional markets in Samarinda City. The focus is on understanding the level of awareness, perception, and experience of traders in adopting QRIS in their daily business activities. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with selected traders and direct field observations. The study identifies several driving and inhibiting factors in QRIS adoption, such as digital literacy, customer preferences, ease of access to mobile devices, internet connectivity, and the role of banks or payment service providers in facilitating onboarding. The findings show that while some traders have embraced QRIS due to customer demand and transaction convenience, others remain hesitant due to lack of knowledge, technical difficulties, or a preference for conventional cash-based transactions. Moreover, the use of QRIS is found to improve record-keeping, reduce errors in change calculations, and offer increased transparency in sales reporting. However, infrastructural challenges such as internet signal instability and resistance to digital transformation remain significant obstacles. This research concludes that successful adoption of QRIS in traditional markets requires not only technological readiness but also targeted education, continuous support, and active collaboration between government agencies, fintech companies, and trader communities. The implications of this study provide valuable insights for policymakers and financial service providers to better design inclusive strategies that foster digital payment literacy and adoption in grassroots economic settings.
