Abstract

This study explores the evolution of construction techniques along the Mahakam River in Tenggarong, East Kalimantan, from the Kutai Kingdom era through Dutch colonial times to the modern period. The Mahakam River and the region’s humid, flood-prone tropical climate have significantly influenced building forms, materials, and construction strategies. The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with historical and technical analysis, incorporating literature review, field observation, and visual documentation. Findings reveal that despite changes in methods and technology across eras, core environmental adaptation principles such as building elevation, drainage systems, and material selection remain consistent. This study highlights the importance of integrating local knowledge and modern technology in sustainable construction planning for riverfront areas.
